Charlotte, NC interesting landmarks

A few weeks ago the Charlotte Observer printed an article about the Seven Wonders of Charlotte. Seven landmarks that you may or may not have known about and I thought they were interesting. What do you think? Can you name other spots in Charlotte as equally or more interesting? Let me know. As a realtor it is always nice to point out these types of landmarks and facts about our city to folks relocating to Charlotte. Here are the seven that were mentioned in the Observer article.

1. Queens Road West: A roughly one-mile stretch of road in the heart of Myers Park, from East Boulevard to Selwyn Avenue. Queens Road with its Gothic canopy, stately homes, wide streets and sidewalks make this a favorite venue for cyclists, runners, walkers and people just driving by.

2. The Big Rock Shelter: A cluster of the largest-known exposed boulders in the area, Elmstone Drive, off Elm Lane. This mass of granite is roughly the size of an 1800 sq. ft. house and roughly the height of eight Toyota Camrys stacked one on top of the other.

3. Calvary Church: a nondenominational church off of Pineville Matthews Road. This church stands out among churches because of its soaring facade, designed to look like a crown. It has thousands of sq. ft. of mirrored glass that in the right light casts images of clouds or beautiful sunsets. Once known as the pink church, until the facade was recently finished and is more of a taupe color. Inside is one of the world's largest pipe organs and is 10 stories in height. Definately a landmark everyone in South Charlotte knowns.

4. Duke Energy light show: each night Duke's 786 foot headquarters at 550 S. Tryon Street, offers a two minute show every hour on the hour from sunset to midnight and 5 am to sunrise. 625 LED lights illuminate the edges and peak of the building. They even turn the lights blue for Panther games!

5. Metalmorphosis: at the Whitehall Corporate Center (near 1-485 & Arrowood Rd) is a 25 foot, 14 ton motorized sculpture, which consists of horizontally moving stainless-steel plates that form and reform a giant metal head. It is part of a fountain and the head even spouts water. This artwork was created in 2007 by artist David Cerny. Way Cool!

6. US National Whitewater Center Rapids: the world's largest man-made recirculating river has been designated an offical training center for the US Olympic Committee. Rafting is just one of the fun activities vistors can enjoy, Definately something to check out located at 5000 Whitewater Center Parkway, on the western edge of the city.

7. Charlotte Motor Speedway: a 1.5 mile NASCAR superspeedway with a seating capacity of 135,000 located at 5555 Concord Parkway South in Concord, NC. This is a sprawling 2000 acre complex was the first speedway to offer year round condo living and the first speedway to install lights to host night racing. In May, it unveiled the world's largest high definition television, 200 ft wide and 80 ft tall. (now that's a big tv). During big races the speedways' infield turns into a small city of 50,000 race fans, roughly the population of Matthews and Huntersville combined, now that's alot of people! I know I have been there and it is a lot of fun and great people watching!

YMCA to open in Wesley Chapel

YMCA officals announced this week that the YMCA of greater Charlotte will be opening a new "express center" in western Union County. The center that will open around August 15th at the Village of Wesley Chapel located on Weddington Road at Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road will be about 5,000 square feet, with exercise equipment, free weights and locker room facilities. The "express center" located in Weddington on Providence road is scheduled to close.

This express center will be in the shopping center that already has restaurants, shops and Harris Teeter. As a Wesley Chapel resident myself I welcome the new tenant and another convenience to living in the Wesley Chapel area.

Interesting Fourth of July Fact #1

Fifty-six men signed The Declaration of Independence. They came from the newly formed thirteen colonies. Pennsylvania had the most signers with nine; Rhode Island had the fewest with two.

The document was not signed on July 4^th, but approved by the Second Continental Congress on that day. It was signed on August 2^nd, 1776. All of the men were not present and it was not until January 1777 that all fifty-six signers put their name on the Declaration of Independence.

John Hancock has the largest signature on the paper.

Interesting Fourth of July Fact #2

Of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence, two would become President of the United States. They were:
John Adams, our second President 1797-1801

Thomas Jefferson, our third President 1801-1809

Interesting Fourth of July Fact #3

Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, Presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence, died on July 4^th, 1826. American lost two of it’s great leaders on it’s fiftieth birthday.

Interesting Fourth of July Fact #4

The first Independence Day celebration occurred on July 8^th, 1776. The Liberty Bell was sounded and the people of Philadelphia gathered to hear the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

There are many different stories about how the Liberty Bell got it’s famous crack. Some say it was cracked and repaired a few times, others sources site that there was no mention of a crack until 1846. One thing is known for certain…it is a major symbol of our nation’s liberty.

Interesting Fourth of July Fact #5

According to American folklore, Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag, as commissioned by General George Washington. But who designed it?

It is believed that while Betsy Ross did change the original six pointed star to a five pointed one to make the sewing easier, it was Francis Hopkinson who designed the flag. Hopkinson was a well known patriot and Congressman from New Jersey, who was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Although historical data does support this, it can never be known with complete certainty.

The design of the American flag is symbolic. The thirteen red and white stripes represent the thirteen original colonies. There are seven red and six white stripes. The field of blue has stars, one for each state in the country.

The color white stands for purity and innocence; red for hardiness and valor, and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

The original thirteen stars were made in a circle to show that each colony, no matter what it’s size, was equal to the others.

The Fourth of July did not become a paid Federal holiday until 1941. From 1870 until that time, it was an unpaid Federal holiday.

The first fireworks display on Independence Day took place in 1777 at the encouragement of Congress. It is now traditional for cities and towns across the Untied States to have their own fireworks celebrations for it’s residents. This way, it can be more spectacular and safer than having them at home. These are often accompanied by parades, carnivals, and other township activities.

While it is not known when the first official Fourth of July barbeque occurred, it has been recorded that as far back as 1777, towns celebrated our break from British rule and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. After the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, picnics, parades, and fireworks became ways that Americans celebrated the holiday.

Today, millions of Americans host barbeques for friends and family. About 150 million hot dogs are eaten on July fourth each year!

Interesting Fourth of July Fact #10

Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem, in 1814. It was written after he watched the British bombarding the American army one night. When the smoke cleared, the American flag was still proudly waving in the breeze. This inspired his poem, which was later set to music.

A national study ranks Union and York, SC counties as two of the healthiest places to live in the Carolinas. In North Carolina, Union County ranked third, behind Wake and Orange Counties. Just another great reason to choose Union County when relocating to the Charlotte, NC area!

"Buyer Beware" when buying a foreclosure

Ok we all know the saying "Buyer Beware" but this story is beyond that! I just read an article about a couple in Idaho who thought they had bought a five bedroom dream house for less than $180,000 but little did they know they were purchasing the house that locals had nicknamed the snake house. Yikes! The buyers lived their for 3 months before moving out. They said there were so many snakes that at times the ground surrounding the home appeared to move and at night they would lie awake and listen to the slithering inside the walls. At the height of the infestation the owner killed 42 snakes in one day.

Now owned by JP Morgan Chase the house was reduced to $109,200 in early January but has since been removed from Zillow after the Discovery Channel's Animal Planet featured the homeowner's story in its "Infested" series. I wondered how long until this story is made into a movie for Halloween?!

So even when a house looks like a deal better check every nook and cranny before signing on the dotted line.

Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems plans to open an engineering center in Charlotte and create 135 high-paying jobs over the next five years. The company will pay average annual salaries over 100K per year.

Slumping housing market helps rental market

What is the saying? "One's man's misfortunate is another one's gain" or something like that. The Charlotte Observer reported Sunday, May 29, 2011 that the troubled home market is creating a generation of renters. Well some would agree and some would not. If you are trying to sell your home in today's market you may see this as a negative. However, people are selling their homes it is just taking time so don't dispair.

As there is more demand for rental units I would think monthly rental rates will continue to increase and with mortgage rates still at an all time low many will see the advantages of buying in a great buyers market where not only may your monthly mortgage payment be less than your rental payment but you can now buy properties at a great price. If you are a first time home buyer with good credit and nothing to sell this is a great time to take advantage of the market! If you do have property to sell this is the time to stage and price your home to sell and buy something new at a great price. If you are an investor looking to buy rental properties this is a great opportunity to purchase inventory! The South Charlotte and Western Union County have some great properties for sale.

So, what first may sound like a negative can definately be a positive. It is all in how you look at it.

News from WSOCTV.com in Charlotte:

News station WSOC-TV in Charlotte, NC broadcast a report on Wednesday, May 18th with new housing numbers that say Charlotte is No. 1 in the country according to the National Association of Realtors.

The report states that “The median home price in the area, which includes Charlotte, Gastonia and Concord, was $195,000 for the first quarter of 2011, up more than 12 percent from the first quarter of 2010.”

One area REALTOR told the reporter that established neighborhoods, including Myers Park, Dilworth and Beverly Woods, saved the day.
